Weather Balloons Used to Smuggle Cigarettes Shut Down Vilnius Airport

Recovered contraband balloons
At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes, have been collected so far

Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.

Flight Disruptions

The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.

Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.

International Illegal Trade

Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."

To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.

Cross-Border Effects

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

Illegal Transport Methods

In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."

Regional Security Context

The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.

Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
