A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying such treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
