Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. During this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
