Pentagon Report Concludes Hegseth Placed Troops in Danger with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing classified intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in dispute contained particulars about a planned airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the group reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation determined that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he shared, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or compromised the mission. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be released in the coming days.
