In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
