EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
