RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
